I am building the template for a website from a RT that will have a subdomain for each different state. The websites will vary in color, logo and possibly menu links. Everything else will remain the same. Do I need to install Joomla! in each subdomain? If so, how can I duplicate what I have done?
I've never worked with custom presets before. Maybe that is the way to go? If that is the case, would I have to make 50 different menus? If anyone could shed some light for me I would be greatly appreciative. - Thanks.

I don't see how you can pull off 50 slightly different templates with one install...
You can set up a 'master template' with all the extensions you want to use, tweak it the way you like and then use Akeeba to back it up and create an installer to deploy it to all your sub domains. (Which would require 50 separate installs, 50 different databases, etc...)

Keep in mind though, sub domain = entitlement, so if you want to deploy 50 sub domains, that's 50 entitlements... you may consider upgrading to a developer membership which allows you unlimited entitlements for the duration of your membership.

I'm zero in drupal, but it has some multi-site thingy. Will that do the trick?
But you may not know/want drupal in the firstplace.

This would be simple using sections and categories.
Create a section for each state
Create a hidden menu that contains all 50 states
Use the Gantry menu overrides in the template to create a different colour set for each menu item. - Designer, copywriter, SEF expert

This was my strategy for a similar situation where each college club would have their own logo'd part of the website. It takes some paying attention to the url rewrites and individual modules for each one, but the subdomain "idea" can be achieved with one install.

Read Bens article. It gives step by step for setting up the categories and modules.
Then read this:

which explains how to use menu over-rides to change the preferences for each menu item which includes layout options and colours.
Your urls will be something like:
www.sitename.com/state/
