Give up on Joomla 1.6?
Posted 13 years 11 months ago
There is a ton of extensions and proven code for Joomla 1.5. In my research, there is a huge push back on Joomla 1.6 whether it be the extensions (K2 comes to mind) and theme clubs are only grudgingly making templates for 1.6. I had wanted to use 1.6 to get a jump on 1.7 and anything else that Joomla has in store for us but training is limited and documentation for 1.6 templates are still written for 1.5.
So, the big question. I wasn't around when people were using 1.0 and 1.5 came out. If I go back and develop in 1.5 what are the odds that I'll have a major rewrite of any site that I create when Joomla 1.7- 1.8 comes out and is accepted by the community?
Joomla's plan of action wasn't to even create an upgrade package for 1.5 until 1.8. They are on a different release cycle and treating 1.6 and 1.7 like Beta versions of their new Joomla.
1.5 is supported through mid next year.
1.6 is only supported for another couple months.
1.7 will only be supported through the end of this year.
Weird, I know, but 1.5 is a Long Release and the other two are Short Releases. 1.8 will be the next Long Release.
They have stated that the move from 1.5 to 1.whatever will not be as bad as 1.0 to 1.5. Honestly, 1.0 to 1.5 was only tough if your site was loaded with extras that weren't supported in 1.5.
In short, I wouldn't sweat sticking with 1.5 for now and waiting for the bugs to get worked out of the newer versions.
Here's a link on where upgrades procedures are at so far, but remember, this is all 3rd party and not a route Joomla is working on. You will be able to do things at least this easily though when the time comes...

Thanks Ben for your good advice. I appreciate the speed at which you sent your messages as well. I got Joomla 1.5 installed on my laptop with the Maelstrom theme and will transition my site back as well.
