Templates and Joomla 1.7 and beyond

How far back will you guys go (in other words, which month will be the last you will go back to to make compatible to 1.7)? I'm thinking of switching templates on my site, and I want to have an idea of which will be supported into the next version or versions of Joomla.
As I don't want to pick one and a few months down the road have an issue if you aren't going to be updating it.
Specifically, Panacea, will it continue to be updated to work with Joomla 1.7 and Joomla 1.8? Or is it at the end of it's life?
Also, which template is the oldest that will be upgraded for the next Joomla version?
I know timelines aren't yet in place but just knowing which ones I can be looking at without having an issue in a month or two because of it not being updated.
(I hope I am explaining myself well with my question).

- we will be following the joomla release schedule, so 1.6 compatible templates will be updated as needed to support 1.7 and then in turn to support 1.8. We will continue to support 1.5 versions also until that is EOL'ed next year.
