Joomla 1.7 due in 2 hours: Will Upgrading be easier for 1.6?

Pretty much that is the question:
It seems through researching the issue Joomla 1.6 was / is the equivelent of Windows Melenium (if anyone remembers that folly). Nobody wanted to use it and simply waited until the XP version was released... Which Microsoft did it quickly.
Now, I am not saying that 1.6 was some failure but that is what I have started my site with so I am stuck with it now.
One of the main reasons why I choose joomla 1.6 is because they stated going from 1.6 to 1.7 and beyond will be a simple upgrade not a site migration from Joomla 1.5 which would literally cause to rebuild the entire site. So, while 1.6 wasn't as polished as everyone hoped I felt starting with it was going to be the wiser choice.
With that said will it be advisable to hold off from upgrading to 1.7 untill you guys (rockettheme) give the nod to update?
Also, will that nod come in a form of an update or an announcement? The reason why I ask is because supposedly the uprgrade from 1.6 to 1.7 is supposed to be painless and have no impact on 1.6 extensions.
