New to Joomla and Fireworks and...

Posted 17 years 10 months ago
    • Hi,

I'm pretty new to joomla and website creation. I can grasp the ideas given in the tutorials but I'm confused as to whether or not HTML is used. One of my concerns is SEO and changing things like the meta tags etc. I downloaded RokWebify package and started messing around and I didn't see any html files just png, css, image and php files. Is the png supposed to be the "html"? I tried looking it up but it had something to do with graphics.

I'm so used to seeing HTML/CSS that this whole using of fireworks and joomla is getting my head confused. ???

Hopefully one of you could help or point me in the right direction.
      Thanks! ;D

    • At your early stage I don't recommend you modify anything apart from the logo, for which there is a very basic tutorial for rokwebify. I don't think it can get more basic than that tute, so ask a specific question and we can answer.

Every .png file is an image (a picture, if you will) that is used to form the site. Leave them alone for the moment (except for the logo, which you should modify as per the tute)

You will also notice an index.php file in the template. This php file will be run by your server and as per the commands in the php file, the server will output the final HTML which will be the framework of your site.

The HTML in that output will be styled by the css files you see in the template. The css files hold styles for all the HTML elements.

Fireworks is just an image editing program, a super-duper Microsoft Paint, if you are familiar with that old favourite :D Use it only when you need to change the logo of your site.

Fireworks has its own help tool to help you become familiar with it.

    • Great advice Gollumx. ;)

Mick, I remember when I first started out, it was a bit overwhelming. I struggled, but I also read a ton of tutorials. Like Gollumx stated, if you have a question we will do our best to help you out. :)

Wow you guys are great, didn't expect an answer that quick!

Gollum, you answered some questions starting out but I'm still confused. I'll try to comb the forums for the answer in the mean time but is there any way to access the html or is everything done in the joomla cpanel?

I have a basic understanding of what CSS is and how it relates to the HTML. I thought fireworks was a new form of HTML(but it doesnt seem like thats the case now). As for the 'super duper' paint shop, I was thinking it does have a familiar feel to photoshop.

      Anyways,
Is there some voodoo that goes on where the php script does something with the png file in addition to the css to churn out an html file. I'm freaking out because I don't see any html. I get what they are separately it's just how they relate to each other (especially with the html, lol) that I'm having trouble understanding. :-\

      Lastly ::)
What do you guys recommend studying ( I know of the joomlatutorials.com and w3schools.com) ie links and such to get a decent enough grasp. Thanks!

    • The index.php file is basically a HTML file with some PHP code thrown in. Open it up in an editor; notepad will do but i suggest PSPad . You will see HTML amongst the PHP code. Depending on which template you are working with you will see either divs or tables. Note that additional HTML is added later by the Joomla core. The other HTML (<p>,<br />, <img> etc is added dynamically by the Joomla core.

W3Schools is a good source of info. When i was starting out I also learnt alot from http://www.htmldog.com/ .

      Good luck Mick

    • I remember years back struggling with my pc! I had just mastered turning the light switches on and off! Then I got into web design using Dreamweaver html. I had come across Joomla and Mambo around a year ago and found it so confusing I gave up and went back to the good old html!

6 months ago I installed my first Mambo and found it quite simple to edit by downloading the images in Dreamweaver, editing on Photoshop and re-uploading! Then I learned about Joomla! I'm also not familiar with php coding but with rockettheme there's no need to be. The templates are perfect and one can simply tailor the site with your own images, text and voila! A professional site!

I have become so addicted; it's now 1:30 in the morning Bangkok time and I cannot stay out of Joomla. Joomla has taken over my life! No more going out with cute Thai girls! Oh no ... it's rockettheme and Joomla ... keep up the good work. Fantastic customer support, value for money and a new life long member!

    • Thanks again gollum, the explanation on the php helped.

I turned to joomla because of the ease of managing a website (or so I heard) but when I FIRST tried it out I was looking for an .exe file and that's when I hit a wall. Nothing was familiar and I was like screw it...

I did the same thing and laid off joomla. Then I found out about rockettheme through the joomla forums and whoa. These are perhaps the nicest templates I've seen. So I was thinking maaaaybe I'll give it another shot. Before this, there were other places that offered WAAAY more but it's about quality. Even though they have more, the tweaks were very slight and nothing very innovating.

At this point I just want to get my site up and running, but one that's well designed at the same time because I've seen garbage thrown up all the time. Now with the power of joomla and rockettheme templates my confidence has gone up quite a bit.

Kinda sucks that I'll be vacationing to china in a few weeks when I'm just starting to get my hands dirty ... hehe :D Wish I could be in thailand, I have a colleague up there ;D

Hopefully, I'll have everything up and running before the summer is up
      Thanks again guys 8)

    • lol lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet. I don't even know what those are ??? (rokzoom and rokslideshow). I've seen the rokslide content(=rokslideshow?) and the rokmoomenu(cow?) in action and can't wait to implement at least one of them!
But recently, I just got the ftp and uploading all figured out :P

Even with the ftp upload had the weirdest problems...

Sounds like the weather over in china is sizzling and the humidity is no joke :-\ Thank god for A/C!
I'll be sweating like a cool glass of lemonade on a hot day x10...
