    • If you have your Joomla! in the root, you can add a new file "index.html" with an embedded flash intro. On most servers I have encountered, .htm and .html files load first before a .php file.

    • Depends on your server settings, so if what James suggested doesn't work, try:

Adding the following line in the .htaccess file in your site root
      DirectoryIndex index.html

      Then do what James said.

    • I know with my cpanel you can also select the default page that loads
Though would you want to do this? I thought it descreased your rankings in search engines

Never heard this before, and doesn't make sense to me. Do you have a source? Thanks.

    • I've always considered a splash page as a web design no-no, much like the dreaded blink tag.

For a commercial site, I would never use a splash page.

      Cheers!

Geez. Ignore this will ya bloggs-x. You're absolutely right. For some reason I thought you were implying that a .html homepage would be worse for your SERP's rankings than a .php one. I'm not sure where that came from.

If your splash page has little or no text (If it's just images or flash), your SERP's rankings will most certainly take a dive.

Besides, why force your visitors to have to make one extra click to get to your site content? You should make the user experience your top priority. Visitors want content. Content is king. Don't hide it behind a splash page.

My 2 cents, and apologies to bloggs-x.

    • I've got a tag-on question about Flash, and since this thread is so close to my questions I am just gonna add-on instead of making a whole new thread.

I want to put a large flash movie as the primary content on a site's front page, but I am not sure the best way to do this.

      Here is what I tried:

Created a new module and inserted my flash movie via the Imbed Media button in the editor. I pick the dimensions, and the movie actually shows up in the pop out insert media window. I click Insert, and then save. When I reopen the module, the flash presentation is now a tiny red blip in the editor, and it does not show on the webpage.

      Any suggestions?

The best way to do this is to not do this. It is one of the most annoying things someone can do to a website. That, or play a loud midi rendition of the macarena, both will have the same result. The user will click the back button and never come back to your site again.

      "Any suggestions?"

If you must have one, give your readers the option of launching it. Add play controls to it so it doesn't make a sound, unless the reader is ready for it to make a sound.
