Which Joomla Version?

Hi,
I am at the beginning of a new project and want to realise it with a Rockettheme Template. I am really confused on which Joomla Version to use now. The Template I would like to use does not support Joomla 1.7 but I would like to use version 1.7 so at the moment only the latests template of Rockettheme is valid for this version. Will there be an update for the already existing templates to work with Joomla 1.7 or does Rockettheme recommend stay on 1.6? Although I would really like to update to the latest version as soon version 1.8 will come out and then the next version ...
Please could you give me some advise, as I have looke already in the forum but did not find any answer.

I noticed 1.6 was gone from the downloads at Joomla.org
I've got a copy of 1.6.5 stable in my downloads folder if anyone needs it.

Ok, so I stick with J1.5 until there is a solid migration path, does that mean that Templates from Rockettheme available at the moment only for 1.5 will be available for 1.7 too? And would I lose any custom modifications done to the design of the template?

I'm not sure Joomla 1.6 is totally gone, I found Joomla 1.6.6 on Jooma.org
The Joomla 1.6 download isn't available from the normal download section anymore though.
