Simple Slide Show and a .swf in 1.7

The time has come to migrate from 1.5. I am working on upgrading a site to 1.7 and Gantry et al.
In the days when life was simple I used RokSlideShow to display a series of images all sized alike, RokSlideShow is gone,,,(at least for 1.7), tried RokGallery (was over kill) but didn't work on the 1and1 host and getting them to add/upgrade takes a higher power. Tried RokBox and displaying an article.for some reason it hung even though the images display in Random Image.
What do you advise to get a simple slide show back running?
My second big question is,,,
I have an .swf file that was some graphic artist idea of a cute dog barking which is the logo next to text. I tried imbedding the old object code in a custom html module but 1.7 seems worse than before about eating it even with the editor toggled off. I tried RokBox not thinking since it doesn't work in modules. I'm not fond of the logo but the client is attached to it. Suggestions?
