Question RE: New Module/CustomHTML/ Custom output

There is a row of buttons at the bottom of the New Module/CustomHTML/ Custom output section and I have a question about the Article Button (see image This image is hidden for guests.) in particular.

I did find this page at a Joomla! site (actually referring to the Article Manager but, the window is the same) http://docs.joomla.org/Help17:Content_Article_Manager_Edit#Article.2C_Image.2C_Page_Break.2C_Read_More.2C_and_Toggle_Editor_Buttons
But, although they refer to the Article Button, they skip right over it and begin the discussion with the Image button!!!
How does this button work? When I've clicked on it I get a pop up window that lists articles. But, clicking on any of the articles does nothing at all. If I close the window there is no effect.
Clearly I'm missing a crucial step ... but, what is it?
