Do you ever really listen to your users?

  • Do you ever really listen to your users?

    • I keep seeing the same questions and issues raised from template to template, from release to release-- you might think we are stupid, and you might be right!... but why not simply add some features to address these same that are being brought up repeatedly???

    • hi kerry,

thanks for the input, but i am clueless about what you are referring to exactly.
no, we don't think anyone is stupid, i wonder what makes you believe that?

what questions and issues are you talking about please?

      kat :)

    • Kat,

From my short time here on the Rocket Theme forum, I have listed issue after issue with Maelstrom and none of these issues have been fixed in a new release - there has been no new release. Some of them were fixed via post-release hacks, which others don't get the opportunity (unless they read that post) to implement. I can see what Kerry was saying, I've been looking through others posts as well, since mine rarely get a reply, and I see that trend.

    • I'm pretty clueless now as I looked at all your 35 posts.
I have listed issue after issue
And cant' find a single post about a reported real template-bug?

With all respect ... please look at them again.
The ie7 stuff you perhaps mean is not in the demo. Most likely t's caused by 3rd party extensions.
And as far as I know this template has no specific K2 styling.
But perhaps you can help me out and point me to your posts so we can ticket them for the devs.

    • I answered your issue after issue response in another post you just replied to. I lay the issues out there for the template I use, and yes, I have listed these issues in posts here on the forum. I have also posted my opinions in the feature request forum (of which a few posts were about bugs - the reason I posted them). I mean that's what a feature request forum is for right? To post and share your thoughts, as a paying member, on what you would like to see from future RT releases and design practices, right?

      The responses I generally got:

      1. This is not our responsibility (not now, of course sometimes, but that's what feature requests are for)
      2. You should pay someone else to do it (that post made no sense if you look at the verbage...)
      3. You should do it yourself (sure on customizations, but not on bugs and inherent design limitations)

So my biggest gripe, is that you don't take the ideas your user-base presents seriously most of the time. I have been "deflected" in about 40-50% of my 35 posts - not the ideal ratio if you ask me.

    • Over 45.000 members ... a good share of them have requests ...
Well, not all request can become reality. But believe me – the devs are looking into the requests forum.

    • do a search for:
      "change template width"
      "change sidebar width"
      "login popup"
and thats whats specific to me, i have no clue what the other users are doing and are asking, but i'm very sure there is a large overlap from template to template..

they way i see it is someone came up with the sexy interface design and you all are stuck with in and refuse to add anything to it to address what the users are _ACTUALLY_ doing- we, your users do not want to come and ask questions here, we simply want to set up the template and have it work.. your design should address that question: "what are the basic things users want to do when customizing the template".. and make sure those are addressed in the interface... its thats simple..

You could start by making a catalog of all the questions in every template forum, then grouping them, then ensuring that at least the top 20 questions are addressed either in your interface or by clean, clear, straight forward documentation-- with screenshots

    • Kerry,

that answer was for Travis (and I'm already checking what he mentioned).

I answered to your other problem with the dropping sidebar module.
We have to inspect that more.
I just posted something so we can see if we are on the right track.

The one thing I wanted to get out of joining this post's conversation is that things like Offline pages, custom 404 pages (which you told me to do myself in another post BTW), and extension/template functionality alterations (in the future) are things that Yootheme, Gavick, Bamboo, and others already do. The two things you have on all of the other providers out there is your immaculate taste for design and Gantry.

Why tell someone to do it themselves on a "feature request" forum, when RT could just as easily implement what the others are already doing by default and be all the more appealing to your customer-base?

I mean, I understand that about 40-60% of all the feature requests are bogus and petty, but there are a good portion of them that are strong, solid customer feedback that could benefit you in the long run. I still claim you guys are by far ahead of the other template providers, but when I offer good feedback about how you can be the ultimate all-in-one, premiere theme club, why should I be told to shut up or be derailed into a position that I shouldn't even have mentioned the issue in the first place?

RT has a horrible gap to close on updating past releases in a timely manner. The Maelstrom template was released in January....why is Crystal being updated now?

    • Hi Kerry,

Change template width - Both Henning and myself have written guides on changing template widths. For both 12 column layouts and 16 column layouts. This enables the column widths to be set smaller or larger than the default 60px (+2x10px margins) that give our foundation of 960px grid.

Change sidebar width - Based on the same grid you only need to adjust the number of columns allocated to the mainbody/sidebar. Again, this will be subjected to the constraints of the 960px grid system, unless you implement the column width changes mentioned above.

Login popup - the majority of questions about login popup has been a confusion from the early templates when we only had the popup position. In later templates we introduced a login position which also pops up. Many people have moved to a newer template and haven't changed the module position accordingly.

The reality is that designing a template with the level of module positions and functionality we already include just isn't going to work if you add too many variables such as user determined widths. If you want that level of control then start with the basic gantry framework and write your own css accordingly, which is what I do for some of my clients.

A lot of the improved functionality has been added based on ideas posted by members. As Henning said, not all of them will come to fruition.

As well as the future requests for features and styles, the devs also get input from the mod team. We answer thousands of posts a month and we get to see the common issues. Sometimes the fix is a stickied set of instructions, other times it is a bug report for the devs, and sometimes we get added to the request list.

      Hope this helps 8)
