General question: is Wordpress right for my project

Not really RocketTheme related, but was wondering if I could get some direction.
I am trying to decide between Joomla and Wordpress for my project. I am more familiar w/ Joomla, but also know WP pretty well too.
I am wanting to build some micro community sites built around different professions, like real estate, and they will be monetized from local advertising. I want to give realtors and different professions custom profiles, ability to write feature blogs, and other features to promote themselves.
My main question is which platform is best Wordpress or Joomla?
Can Wordpress handle a full community/social site? I don't want to get 1000 members and have the site get bogged down.
Also, I am looking at either Buddypress or Mingle for the community aspect. BP seems more customizable. Anyone have experience with either?
I mainly am leaning towards WP because of all the cool seo plugins, ease of use and updating, multi site, etc.
One thing I hate about Joomla is the seo aspect (available extensions) and the pain in updating extensions. WP has a uniform method of updating, Whereas every joomla extension has its own method of updating and produces a lot of errors.
Would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks
