Site Scanner?

    • Hello:

Currently I am using Akeeba Admin Tools Pro and Backup Pro as my security plan. I want to make sure if I need to add any more security features to combat hackers.

Is it necessary or do you suggest a site scanner such as OSE, RSFirewall, or Go Daddy Website Scanner? With Akeeba I get a Firewall with the Admin Tools Pro, is a site scanner necessary? Thanks for any advice

    • In my opinion, "site scanners" and other security features are only as useful as you want them to be. Some of these items require your attention and if you're not around to check things out, or if you don't know how to rectify the issue, they aren't too much help. I'm am however a big fan of Akeeba products and any tips Nick at Akeeba has on htaccess files are very good advice!

Akeeba Admin Tools is a very nice addition to any site and sets certain "blocks" in place for some common attacks. This is sort of a set it and trust it type set up. Website security is always changing and is very very confusing, so these are very helpful.

RS Firewall is more of a monitoring tool as far as I've seen. It does have some good blocking aspects but also alerts you to various things going on in your site. Some of these might be fairly confusing, but you might also find that a particular IP address is consistently trying to hack your admin login and be able to block them easily.

Anytime you're adding security features though, do test your site and see if there are any conflicts. Some things that can happen are repeated url redirects that cause a loop...which will cause your site to not show...or options like in Akeeba Admin Tools Pro where you can remove all instances of "joomla", but this also removes "joomla" from any css file named "joomla.css". So just beware that these are code changes in various ways that affect the way your site might display and be used. Testing is always a good idea.

    • Thanks Ben for your response. So I'm assuming in your opinion the Admin Tools Pro and Backup Pro is a suitable security plan for Joomla?

    • It all depends on what you're trying to protect, how often you back things up, and how much you're willing to lose if things should go wrong.

For most sites out there, the Admin Tools is a pretty sufficient for security if it's set up right. You can spend all your time on security if you wanted so it's good to find what works for you and what you can keep up with, then go that route.

    • Ben with the backup utility as you know I can do daily backups if needed. I know with Akeeba's Kickstart I could be up and running in minutes if I had to restore. Admin Tools Pro seems to be excellent as I'm always receiving emails on blocked security threats. I just want to make sure that I'm not missing out on any tool that should be part of the basic security plan. As of now I will roll with Akeeba :)
