SOLVED - Newbie to RocketTheme needs advice on template
Posted 13 years 8 months ago
Hi,
I am new to RocketTheme and I need some advice on which template is best for me to use for my particular site. Prior to this I had designed my sites in html and created custom CMS content managment systems using ASP pages. So I have good experience with working on websites. I'm just new to Joomla and RocketTheme.
I now have a Joomla 1.7 default installation on my domain for my site.
It's an online library site with a lot of real estate articles, videos, photos, and advice (no MLS or houses for sale) so I would need an RT template that works well with that type of site content. Can anyone provide me advice on which RT template would be the best for me to use?
I know that each RT template can be setup with many different styles and configurations, but it would be much easier for me to just use an RT template designed for a site like mine that is mainly an Online Library of articles, videos, photos and other content. Later on I can adjust the settings, configs and modules to try out different changes to the site.
I definitely need to have RokGallery installed since that would be a great extension for the house illustration photos section on my site and would be good for the large slideshow on the home page. I noticed that Reflex has a default layout with the RokGallery slideshow on the home page. I think the RokGallery slideshow can be used with any RT template on the home page or in any module position (correct me if I'm wrong on this).
Also, if you have any recommendations for the best RT extensions to use, that would be helpful. I will probably want RokComments for readers to leave comments under the articles on the site. Another very important factor is that I definitely need to integrate Google AdSense on the site (like it is setup now) so I don't know if there's an RT extension or template that works best for AdSense.
Let me know if you need more details to help me out, (or if I posted this topic in the wrong forum).
Thank you!

I like the Camber and Reflex templates from the ones I viewed so far. But Camber is a little too light colored and Reflex has a border area surrounding the main content that's a little too dark.
I will ask in the Reflex forum if it's possible to adjust the Reflex dark border area to make it a lighter color? Or are those just images inserted in the Reflex borders?
Thanks.

The whole point of templates is for you to modify them how you want.
Rockettheme provide tons of styles for each template with lighter and darker themes.
Things like borders and colours are something you would edit yourself, and its quite easy to do.
The CSS stuff is easily editable by changing the css for that style, you will find firebug a very useful tool for helping you find the specific stylesheet and part you need to edit

Okay on the template changes.
I have seen "firebug" mentioned several times while reviewing the RT support/help text. I've never heard of nor used Firebug before, is it just an html editor?
I'm trying to figure out if installing and using Firebug will make it much easier for me to adjust/config a RocketTheme template after I install one on my site.
I use Microsoft Expression Web 4 to edit/create my html sites but I haven't needed it to do anything related to my new Joomla site since Joomla configs seem to be all done from the ACP in the back-end. Is Firebug similar to a website editor like MS Exp Web, execpt that it's free open-source software?
I also use Internet Explorer 9 for my web browser, but just realized the other day that IE9 has a conflict with some of the screens in the ACP of Joomla 1.7. So I installed Firefox when I need to login to my ACP. Is Firebug used with the Firefox web browser or can it also be used with Internet Explorer?
Thanks for any advice.

I use it with firefox, their may be an IE version but IE sucks anyway... lol
Firebug allows you to inspect a pages HTML, CSS, Javascript, errors etc...
It works on ANY website without needing a login or anything, you simply install firebug and when you want to see the HTML or css of an object just right click the object and click 'inspect element' and firebug shows up and shows you everything to do with the element you clicked on.
It allows you to edit the HTML and CSS on the fly, so you can edit someone elses css and html to see how it would look, but obviously it only shows on your browser etc...
So its very handy for finding out where the css style is for a certain item or bit of text, or to find out what javascript or ajax is being ran at a certain time.
Its very powerful and similar things are being introduced into browsers as standard now, its makes life so much easier when editing and inspecting your own websites, and is also handy for seeing how someone else made something or for stealing someone elses css or html

IE has IE Developer Toolbar but it's very annoying to use.
Firebug is mainly for Firefox. Read more about it here:
getfirebug.com/
Also, you should get a decent text-editor that has syntax-highlighting and stuff like that. On Windows i prefer UltraEdit and on Mac i use Coda but there are probably thousands of text-editors out there

Firebug Lite is for browsers other than FF (IE6+, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome). It's not exactly the same but if you're accustomed to Firebug and need it somewhere else it's worth a try.

The problem with comparing Developer Toolbar and Firebug is that they have such a different look and feel. When I first started using Firebug it was very difficult to find anything. I kept having to switch over to IE. After I started using Firebug exclusively I don't remember any "Ahha!" moments where I found completely unique functionality that didn't have an equivalent in Developer Toolbar.
I'm assuming the switch between the two would be difficult for anyone.
