SOLVED - Question on SEO extensions and Meta Tags also.

Posted 13 years 7 months ago
    • I have two questions:
      1) Which Joomla extension is best for SEO for a Joomla 1.7 RockeTheme template site? I want to improve the SEO for my site if there's a good extension for that.

      2) I know for SEO meta tags tend to be ignored by search engines but the meta tags might help to display relevant AdSense ads next to my site content. However, I can't find any clear info in the Joomla documentation on this. The Global Configuration screen has Site Meta Description/Keyword boxes to enter text. This might be the meta tags my site is using in all pages. But there's also meta tag boxes to enter text for each menu item, category, and article. I can't figure out which ones are the best to use or which ones override the others when pages display in a browser.

      Thanks for any advice!

    • NOTE to forum mods: Right-Click is disabled on my site but source code is visible. Unfortunately, I have some images on my site that are licensed and the agreement is that right-click be disabled. I use the F12 key for Firebug instead of right-click. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    • The Global data is used as default for any menu item, article, etc that doesn't have their own description/keywords. Global data also ends up as the summary under you domain in search results. Any metadata you fill out beyond the Global Config will override it. I would fill out unique descriptions for all your main pages.

Meta data is certainly not ignored by search engines. It's the only way your website will display correctly (i.e. the way you want it). If you don't have meta data it might pull your H1 headers or something and not display how you intended it to.

Remember, SEO makes it easier for bots and web-crawlers to read and index you site content. Joomla's built in SEO plus robots.txt generation does a good job of this. Additional extensions can help generate meta descriptions and tags automatically or can help if you have hundreds of pages that require unique meta data.

Unfortunately SEO optimization by itself will not put you on the top of all your favorite keyword searches. But it is the first step. Good luck!
