Well, some days back I hurriedly passed over my payment details to RocketTheme in order to make use of what seemed to be the best image slideshow extension available on the market. I talk of course about RokGallery.
I had some problems getting it to work, but thanks to wonderfully helpful users, I soon had it up to full speed. But then I notice another issue. Even though I had the box ticked for "maintain aspect ratio", the slideshow insisted on stretching images. Turns out that the RokGallery can't handle landscape and portrait images together, so now I'm here, seeking further advice.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for another slideshow gallery that can handle portrait and landscape images?
I'm building a photography website, and want to have sever slideshow galleries. Ideally, I'd like to have thumbnails displayed vertically to the left of the main image, and where there are a large number of thumbnails, perhaps they could be displayed in two columns.
Anyway, any comments on experience would be much appreciated.
Here's what I'm currently using for various needs. Probably more than you need but it may be useful to someone.
Image Slideshow
I think the best out of the box non-commercial JS extension is showplus. I started using it a year or two ago and it just works. It looks like it meets all your criteria but the two columns of thumbnails.

Image Gallery
For galleries I like sigplus. I used this to make an entire stock photo website a while ago.

Flash Slideshow/Galleries
If you're open to a flash slideshow, there are several very slick extensions.
JSN ImageShow PRO is a commercial extension but offers the best back end, best feature list, and useful extras like watermarks and backgrounds. Biggest letdown is that they only have two themes to control the layout of your gallery.
I recommend showplus or 1 Flash Gallery for a slideshow.

I recommend SlideshowPro. Its actually a CMS on its own and a whole media management system, as it could be used for AV content as well.
It features built in publishing options for the slideshows and has an extension for a thumb grid.
The available Flash component allows the development of fully customized players. The API is awesome.
For devices without Flash it redirects to a built in HTML5 player.

I integrated it in several sites I've built, heres one of them

Subject: Re: ShowPlus conflict with Rocket Theme Gantry Template
Hello,
Unfortunately, there is a programming error in the Gantry Framework stylesheet/script merger, which causes it to malfunction when an extension adds IE conditional comments to the page header. A conditional comment is a special instruction that only IE understands but does not affect other browsers, and is used by showplus in order to get around non-standard behavior in IE 7 and IE 8. A merger is an automatic utility that extracts all stylesheet and scripts referenced by a page into a single stylesheet and script, and is meant to improve the responsiveness of the site. Finally, a stylesheet tells the browser how the site should look, and a script is what is responsible for dynamic behavior on a web page such as slideshow transitions.
Having drilled through all technical terminology, the solution is extremely simple: please turn off the merger on the Gantry Framework configuration page. I would love to give exact instructions, but I do not have any Rocket Theme templates installed. If you can give super administrator access to the website, I could of course find and change the configuration setting.
Well he writes that you should disable css-compression.
RokGZipper-plugin in the plugin-manager
and/or
GantryGZipper in the template-settings
(just to say that ... I think the Kenburns-effect is a plague for the internet. I leave sites that are using it as fast as I can and won't visit them again ... )
Worked!
Noticed that RokZipper allows you to exclude files. Could I just list the .css and .js files in showplus? What is the format in the exclude box? commas, no path, partial path, one per line? Didn't see it in a search.
If I can do this I can turn RokZipper back on.
Thanks!
