Older Solarsentinel pkg upgrd to Joomla 1.7 ?

I have the Solarsentinel (2010) and got the original package of the Template and joomla combined, not sure of the versions,1.5 or 1.6? not sure, website is in transition and don't currently have access to the Joomla Admin page.
Asking if I can upgrade to Joomla 1.7 without causing problems with the current Solarsentinel template. I see it is compatible to 1.7, but they were in a package together at the time, so not sure if it would crash if I upgrade using just the Joomla 1.7 because it's so integrated and it would cause problems, or if I can just go to the Joomla 1.7 upgrade and upgrade.
(I see other posts regarding questions of 1.7 packages, but not upgrading an older package to the newer Joomla 1.7 - if you find the thread, please post the link- thanks)
