Cannot get templates to work in J 1.7

I am just starting with Joomla 1.7 after using 1.5 for a long time.
On 2 different host I have tried to use templates in Joomla 1.7 with no luck. I am using templates made for 1.7 but they are crashing the site. I switch back to a them from joomlaxtc and it will come up but with a lot of weirdness to go through and tweak out.
Any time I switch back to the Rockettheme template I only get a blank page and I get a warning from pingdom.com (hosting up-time and response time monitor) that the site is down. The Joomla favicon won't even load in the address bar. It defaults back to the hosting favicon and a blank page.
On one site on a different host I had to go back to 1.5 in which everything worked fine.
What am I missing about 1.7 that is causing templates to not work?
Joomla 1.7.2 - PHP version 5.2.17 Tried both latest version of Momentum for 1.7 and Zephyr for 1.7.
Here are some errors that are logged. Not sure what they mean or if they are related to the issue...

- Also, the default template that comes with the Joomla install works fine.

- Another possibly important note... Everything with the templates works fine in the administrator template manager.
