Help with menu sytling and background image

Hello,
I am using joomla 1.7 and Gantry default template.
I would like to style the menus I have created. I have switched menu control off and created my own menu ( see attachment ), but don't like the way it looks. I would also like to be able to use a background image which covers the entire background of the page, but not sure how to do this.
Also if I do switch menu control back on I cannot seem to get rid of the default menu which is permanently at the top of the page.
If anyone could help it would be very useful.
