RedShop a warning!

    • Hi, I normally like to post positive reviews but with regards to RedShop and their unethical business practises I cannot.
I’ve purchased an annual subscription as was interested in utilising an ecommerce package after numerous issues with VirtueMart.
The software does work, the interface is not (in my humble opinion) completely intuitive.
But the software does work, albeit HIGHLY expensive and I would strongly suggest using MagentoGo if you can, you’ll be happy in the long run.

The SIGNIFICANT gripe that I have with RedShop is their unethical business practises.
Please be warned, when purchasing (in good faith) an annual subscription via PayPal, when you pay your first invoice there is another component added to your PayPal account that will transfer funds from your account to theirs next year without your permission. If you are PayPal savvy this is easy to stop in advance – but unless you know it’s going to happen (as I did not), you will be invoiced, funds will be taken from your account and RedShop will not refund your money and when you try and work with RedShop to have your funds return I think you will be shocked at the rudeness of their reply.

RedShop is not Cheap, in AUD I’ve just donated close to 300.00 with nothing to show as I do not use their software as I have migrated to MagentoGo (a far superior product).
I tried to get a refund and well… they’ve just been rude.
They’ve pretty much stolen my money.

Be warned when dealing with these people as they are unethical.

      Regards

      Mark

    • As much as i feel your pain... if you forgot to cancel the subscription... then you r are not really entitled to your money back.

I know its not what you wanted to hear, but it happens with any subscription plan as 99% of them with auto renew.

My xbox Live does it, my mobile phone contract, my car insurance, my domain names etc...

As a gesture of good will and for customer service, they should be able to re-emberse you within 14 days of the payment coming out, but i don think they are obliged to, or at least a partial refund minus admin fee's.

You live and you learn unfortunately.

    • I believe Mark is correct in his assessment.

Opt-in is the ethical approach to subscriptions of any sort.
Opt-out with notification at time of renewal (an email with clear notice and plenty of time to take action) is also OK.
Opt-out without clear notification at time of renewal is sleazy and unethical. If I understand Mark's post, this is what happened.

If major companies participate in unethical scams of this sort, that doesn't justify the practice.

    • @Adamck - I beg to argue the point and only low down businesses will auto subscribe you without making sure you are aware of it ahead of time. I had the same issue with these bums and the same thing happened to me. If your assessment was correct that 99% of them do set this up then of the 2000 transactions I have made over the years with subscription based businesses I have some how slipped through the cracks and have only experienced 1% doing this unethical act!

I only wish RocketTheme did do this (setup autosubscribe) as I am setting here waiting for someone (ANYONE) to help me figure out why I cannot renew my subscription here...;)
