how to have different color variations assigned to different pages?

I am wondering how I would go about having different sections of my site each assigned a different color variant of my chosen template, sort of like how it is done on joomla.org. So far, the only idea I have come up with is to have multiple copies of the template installed and assigned each variation of the template to which ever pages I want. However, that leaves me with a few questions that I would be eternal greatfull if anyone could answer:)
1. First, and most importantly...is there an esaier way to do this that I have overlooked!
2. If I try to install multiple copies of the same template, wouldn't I get the "blah blah blah, that already exists, are you trying to install it twice" error from joomla?
3. I have setup a site that I used Sporticus gator variant for the main site, and then used bento box dark for the picture gallery section. However, when I chose Bento and clicked the assign button to assign it to the Pictures section I basically was presented with a list of either pages, or menu items (not sure which it was). It would seem more logical to me if I could assugn the template to the Section named Pictures that way and page I created in that section would automatically be assigned the Bento template rather than my having to assign the Bento template to each and every page I create in that section. Is this possible and I just overlooked how to do it?
I had one more question, but I forgot it now:( I will update the post if I remember it:)

Well, I discovered the Geo-Sync tempalte that says it is supposed to do something like what I want, so I just downloaded it and will take a look at the code. Hopefully that will get me started on the right track. I did find some info on something called Active Item Detection that also seems to be somewhat like what I am lookingf or. Hopefully between the 2, I will be able to make something truly amazing! Still hoping to hear any good advice from any of you joomla guru's out there!
