I'm considering building a site for a local animal rescue organization. I've used Joomla since before it was called Joomla but I haven't kept up with the latest and greatest for some time now. I'm wondering if it would pay off to use extensions such as Community Builder or perhaps just keep it simple and add pets as articles.
When I say keep it simple I mean for the operator of the site. I don't mind a small learning curve and having to teach the operator some stuff, I just want the day to day type things to be easy on them. So making it super easy to add and remove pets from the site would be a primary concern I think. Adding photos easily that are resized would be nice as well. So when someone uploads a 12 megapixel photo it would resize it for them so it would look correct and not eat up webserver space. I welcome any advice from someone that has experience with this. Thanks.
I would recommend finding a suitable CCK (content construction kit) that your comfortable with and building it on that. There are a number of good ones available now such as K2, Zoo, Seblod that could look after what you're needing to do.
I'm putting some time into learning and using seblod at the moment because it keeps and uses the native joomla articles and user tables etc. but there is a reasonable learning curve and not a whole heap of documentation (but there are some good videos out there if you look). Some of the other are significantly easier to get started with.
I suspect you will find it much easier using a CCK then having to get a number of extension working in harmony together and being simple to use.
