    • Hello,
what SEO plugins do you use on your joomla site? And how does it compare to other plugins? Which plugins did you like and which don't you like? Is it worth spending the money on a commercial plugin? What's your opinion on SEO plugins?

    • I have been concerned about SEO for many years - from the invention of the first search engine in fact - so I can give you my opinion.

When we speak of "SEO" today we really mean Google.

In terms of ranking of your Joomla site in Google, I would weight it as follows:

90% - Quality backinks to your site, gained organically over months or even years. Google know all of the trickery, believe me, so forget getting "backlinks for your site" over a short period, by whatever means - you will do your rankings more harm than good for sure. Note: anchr text in backlinks should be to pages within your site and not just to the home page, and include the subject of the page in the backlink anchor text.

5% - "On page" SEO e.g. keywords. Google is always changing their algorithm so trying to second guess "on page" factors is a waste of time, but you do need your main subject "keywords" on the page of course - but only once or twice in natural order - not just put there - with the keyword in the Heading as an H1. The page subject in the URL of the page after the domain name is a significant factor.

3% - Domain name - if you have a good domain name which reflects the "keyword subject of your site it will definitely help, rather than a generic domain name. It is likely that Google favours older registered domain names, because they are less likely to be "throw away" domain names of the sort used by "SEO people" looking to game Google. Here is a tip: you cannot game Google these days, so focus your efforts on creating a Joomla site with quality content that other siites will actually want to link to :)

2% Other factors which are probably variable.

My view is that the SEF in Joomla 1.7x/2.5x, which is about URL's is easily good enough for SEO/SEF purposes and needs no improvement.

So in summary - your rankings in Google are no longer about Joomla, but rather about the quality of your content and your ability to make the msot effective use of Joomla. No Extension is going to help you with your rankings.
