What the best way to migrate from 1.5.26 to 2.5

I want to migrate away from the old 1.5.26 to the new 2.5.
What would be the best procedure?
I want to keep all the site data and forums so a fresh install is not an option.

I did look through the standard joomla docs before i posted that. People have used scripts to patch sites but all havnt been 100%.
And I didnt know with using rocket templates if it was as easy to update due to plugins / modules and templates. not to mention gantry updates.
So you see its not a simple upgrade of a standard core joomla site as you have linked and fobed me off with a simple you should have searched google.

I would guess that it is clear that any extension, module, plugin or template that is installed on J1.5 version of the web site have to be upgraded to it's counterpart in J2.5. If not, then please accept my apology.

I would highly, highly recommend creating a development version of your site somewhere else (subfolder under your site or somewhere non-critical) or locally with something like WAMP. Back up your current site with Akeeba and restore it at your development area. Work through your upgrade until it works and looks like you want. I suggest using a different database name..just in case. Back up your original site again. Update any tables that have changed since you started working on the 2.5 version. Akeeba backup the 2.5 version. Cross your fingers and restore the upgraded 2.5 version to production.
From my experiences.. it will be hell for a while but as long as you dont work "hot" in your production environment trying to upgrade you should be able to get over the burps if everything at least works in your development environment. At worst case, you can restore your old 1.5 version an go back to working in the development area.
Backup..backup..backup..and did I mention backup?

Thank you SuperCharlie I will follow your advice to the letter and do an upgrade from a backup version on a sub site.
Igor im aware I will have to upgrade all the modules and plugins.
Would I be running into any problems with posistions in anyway shape or form?
Are there any changes to module positions moving from a 1.5 to latest?
and would there be any issues from upgrading gantry?

Hi there,
Module positions are unlikely to be a problem as they tend to be fairly constant throughout Gantry templates. So long as you are staying with same template there will be no issues on positions.
If you use jupgrade then prepare to do some work on your database as it sets everything up with swedish collation instead of utf_general_ci
