Consistent module position names for templates

    • HI,

I suppose this is not possible but..

Why can't you guys name your module positions consistently between templates?

One of the benefits of paying each year for club membership is that we get to use all these awesome templates..

Only this is not really the case I bet for most members. Since changing from template to template is such a nightmare.

Many of the module positions for the templates are basically in the same or very similar positions to older templates. I would think that naming certain 'consistent' positions would be a better way to go.

Recently I downloaded Xemenia, I like it a lot..but actually beginning to use it is another story entirely. Just about NOTHING is common between my J2.5 Refraction template and Xemenia. So changing templates is a task and half.

I am most likely being naive and fully expect to be cut down on this matter, but what is the real big issue here? Why is changing templates in Joomla such a laborious undertaking?

      :)

    • This would be a good post in the Requests forum. The Dev Team uses that forum for many of it's future development plans.

However please keep in mind that going back and changing the position names of older templates is not going to happen. The reason for the different positions names is because new needs or requests from other members bring the need for additional positions so some alterations are made to account for that. but the standard positions have basically remained the same for about 2 1/2 years now and that is like 20 in "Web Design Years" :cheesy:

    • OK..

      Thanks for the reply.

I get that new positions are needed, but honestly the standard positions should be consistent. At least from now on.

I only brought this up as a membership thing, because if templates are not easy to change, it defeats the need for continuous membership right? ;) I'm just trying to help your business model hehe..

    • I do understand what you are saying yet I do again submit that there has been continuity for the major positions for quite some time. (see attached comparison from 2009 to 2012) one major exception would be menu positions but this is for several good reason like; we added multiple positions in the navigation rows for several templates to allow for side by side modules with the menu or nav row and of course who want the navigation to be in the smae spots for all templates could be kind of monotonous or boring.

    • That was a nice comparison. Thanks.

I get it honestly..I guess I just wish it was as simple us uploading a new template and making it default..job done. But nothing is ever that simple. :)

    • yeah I feel your pain and honestly the dev team has tried to accommodate ease of transition between templates as much as possible while balancing that against a wide array of other concerns.

as you said "But nothing is ever that simple."
