New Gantry grid and spacing functionality?

I know the 960 grid is "great" and a standard size, but with the responsive template concept, why not add greater flexibility to template design by allowing the adjustment of number of columns and spacing between columns?
Hope this is something you'll implement soon.
As a designer, I think your templates are the best, but as a business owner, I need to pack a lot onto that home page, and 10 or 20 px gutters (column spacing) is a lot of wasted space.

We're married to Modulus right now, as we've done a lot of modifications to tighten up the spacing.

My request is based on the fact, that while RocketTheme templates are beautiful, they are not space-conscious when it comes to screen real estate.
If Gantry had user-editable options like number of columns and spacing between columns, even vertical spacing between modules, (as your competition does), I would not have to pay for extensive template customization, as I have done.
Updating Syndicate or creation a "responsive Syndicate II" With the features I've outlined above, would be a great addition to the RocketTheme arsenal.
