    SOLVED Is thread bumping allowed?

Posted 12 years 7 months ago
    • I was reading the forum rules where it specifically states that bumping is not allowed:
No useless posts. This includes: Thread bumping, useless one liners, Flamewars, Trolling and Spamming.

And then I notice a menu choice when I am in one of my own threads that say "Bump topic". This is not showing when I am viewing threads started by anyone else.

Does this mean it is allowed? I don't dare click that button until someone has confirmed it is ok

    • Hi, bumping has nothing to do with spam - that's more for the content of the post itself. If you post something ridiculous then keep bumping it, that's more what we are referring to.

While we can't stop you from bumping your own thread, it's not recommended as doing so removes your question from our unanswered threads list if there has not been a response. It will not increase the response time to your question and in many cases it can significantly delay a response.
    • The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Uhm... yes - I know. I did not ask or refer to spam. It was merely a part of the quote about useless posts in the rules :-)
If you post something ridiculous then keep bumping it, that's more what we are referring to.

If you mean that, you should remove what it says in the rules about bumping. Because it specifically say "Useless posts are not allowed" and it uses bumping as an example of useless posts. And this is why it confused me to see the bump-option when viewing my own post.

And yes, I know why bumping is not smart :-) The real problem in a busy forum comes when you have an active thread that either gets abandoned by the moderator in the middle of solving a problem, or it gets hijacked by someone else (you might consider adding a hijacking section in the rules) or it plainly gets ignored. What do you then do?

    • Hi, the rules are guidelines put in place to deter people from posting inappropriate content and acting in an inappropriate way. If you're not doing something inappropriate and are using the forum for it's intended purpose, then you have nothing to worry about.

In reality, we can make as many rules as we want for the forum, that doesn't mean that everyone is going to read them or follow them - but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't because we certainly appreciate the members that respect our guidelines. They are always a few bad apples no matter what. When we see members violating the rules or doing things they shouldn't be doing, we have no problems letting them know and taking appropriate actions.

If you have a thread that is unanswered by a moderator for more than 48 hours, email the link to the thread using our contact form and we can look into it.
