Upgrading Joomla Templates

    • Hi guys,

Somewhat of a generic Joomla template questions that I guess applies to all your templates, and that's what's the best way to upgrade to the latest version of the template without over writing changes ?

That said these days I'm putting all my changes in an override.css file that I tell Gantry to grab on page load (that's Prim for that one) and with Gantry 4 I'm using template-override.less

Is it as simple as copy your override file somewhere, install new template and copy override file back ?

Be a good one to know given how many updates there are to each template these days ..

      Cheers Martin

    • Hi, the best way is to look at the change log on the download page for the theme in question and replace those files via ftp. That is all that is necessary.

If you un-install the existing template in order to re-install the new version, you will lose all of your database settings - which includes all of your backend template settings. Swapping out the files does not affect the database at all.

    • Hey Cliff,

Thanks for that, I had been thinking that you could install the new version over the "old" one without an un-install step ...

Changelog/ftp is certainly one way of going. I must say it would be nice to be able to do a template update in just the same way we do with Gantry or even the Joomla core - one day perhaps :-)

    • Hi, FTP is way to go, it's the fastest and easiest way to make sure you're not overwriting custom changes.

There most likely will not be an updater through the backend for templates. While you are keeping your custom changes separate, not everyone does. If all the files / folders are replaced with new ones during an automatic update - it would wipe away any customizations in the template folder, separate or not. Gantry can be updated because the core files shouldn't be changed and can be overridden through the template.

    • Thanks again Cliff,

I'll grag out and dust off FileZilla ..

It would be nice though if there was a way of the templates referencing "external" changes so this one-click update would work, perhaps in Joomla 4 or 5 ;-)

    • Hi, it would be nice if it was that easy, as would many other things. I just don't see that happening anytime soon.

Updates are full versions of the files, not patches that only contain the changed files - therefore everything is replaced / installed. Having a detection system in place isn't really practical, it would require an updater to access the files on your server in order to compare them and deliver the files you need.

Other than being a bit invasive and a security concern, there are other factors - like if you had made custom changes to a file that is part of the update - like index.php or templateOptions.xml or other files that can't be overridden through custom files - how would it know what to change and what not to change? I think it would cause more problems than it solves, as it wouldn't be able to address every scenario. If it makes a change you didn't want, you'd be right back to FTPing backup files to restore your changes.

FTPing files is just part of having a website. It's usually the only way to preserve custom work in updatable products, ours or anyone else's.

    • Hi, you'll need to upgrade your site the Joomla 2.5 in order to use the template as that is the only version that is supported by us. None of our products work with Joomla 1.6 or 1.7 and both those versions have been discontinued by Joomla.

You'll need to use a migration tool to upgrade your site and database. Look on the Joomla Extension Directory for options, it's not something we can provide support with here.
