Read More Won't Display in Menu Item Single Articles

Hey Guys,
This has been driving me nuts for a couple weeks now. I've tried a few different older templates and get the same results. Blog works great with respect to read more. However I've got a huge article that really needs a break for the end user.

This is a simple Quantive 2.5 site used with Rocket Launcher out of the box. I've disabled modules but that's about it, besides changing article parameters.
After modifying this via html with all kinds of typography, I cannot get the read more to work. If i click on the menu item (with show intro checked), it still displays the entire article.
I've looked through all parameters and cannot seem to shake this one.
Any thoughts?

- Don't forget, that a 'read more' only works if you actually specify the 'intro' text within the article itself. So you need to make sure you have a small 'intro' set, which will then load and display the read more link.

Right on. I've gone the gamut with all the settings in the article, menu, blog, list and other options.
For some reason the code is being stripped from the article when it's rendered out.
Ex: http://cglenjames.com/index.php/resume
About half way down the page, I entered "-READMORE" just before the readmore tag.
Inside the article, the html is such:<p> </p> -READMORE<hr id="system-readmore" /> <p> </p>
If you go the the page, there is no such animal. - ----

OK, took a look . . . you can only use the "read more" if it's a category blog menu item (which is what I've changed it to now). It won't work on a single article.
You can either create a category and have just this 1 x article within it, then use category blog layout and alter settings to suit or alternatively, you could use something like this perhaps:

Got it. Yea, I was messing with SEF items when I noticed this issue. Caching is off. Thanks.
I guess I never had a need to break a single article up before to notice this limitation. No worries however, I did as you suggested- new category with only one article, and it is working as client expects.

Another great way to break up long content is to use an 'accordion' component such as we have here (click the + symbols):
