    bootstrap and gantry

    • In my neverending quest for understanding, I am still trying to figure out all the pieces of the futuristic puzzle. Perhaps someone in a very simple manner aka for "dummies" can enlighten me, as I am still trying to full understand the relationship between gantry and bootstrap.

Gantry framework is great unto itself. You can have gantry though in the past without bootstrap.
Bootstrap is great too. It has a bunch of great features. You can have a gantry template without bootstrap.

So when you combine the two, as is what I gantry 4 is-- what does that mean to me in the full picture. What is it adding to bootstrap?

And can you use lets say the bootstrap menu with gantry with no issue?

I know my post probably sounds a bit confusing...but just trying to understand.

      Thanks!

    • Hi Alicia,

I need spoon feeding with some of the new stuff as I just seem to run out of hours in the day.

My take, in simple terms, is that Gantry and our new templates use the LESS option from Bootstrap to allow templates to be customised with a bit more ease. Especially for developers who can create pieces of code that can then be re-used in various templates. It also means there is more control over the responsive elements of the templates.

I guess the added value, for me anyway, is the ability to take the base Gantry template and work it into something custom with the minimum amount of conflict in terms of CSS and styling. The clever use of globals, variants and mixins just makes simple changes so easy. That is always a benefit when you get a customer who cannot make their mind up.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Thanks for your insight David!
Me, I am the customer who cannot make up here mind..luckily I am my own one and only customer lol.
I've done some more reading and research today to try to better my understanding.
I even toyed briefly with jbootstrap which took full bootstrap and merged it with gantry.

I really do like the ease of gantry in some respects especially for someone like me.
I really like what I see as some bells and whistles in bootstrap+joomla, which I don't see as being incorporated in gantry.

So I will experiment a bit as I build, pulling in things I like from a few sources, mix it in with gantry and see what kind of frankenstein I build. Hopefully one that will work.

      Alicia
