SOLVED Wider template not scaling on tablets/ipad

I've followed the directions in this tutorial to make the column widths greater than 60px in my Visage template running on J2.5 with Gantry.

Which works great when viewed on a large monitor! BUT it doesn't scale when viewed on a tablet/iPad. The website is just chopped off on the right hand side, I cannot even scroll/swipe sideways to see the content.
Reason for this greater width is that the client wants larger/wider images with the sidemenu on the left, and isn't concerned about limiting to 1024px wide.
Is there any way I could force the site to scale?
Or maybe change the pixel widths to percentages? If so, which file & variables am I looking for?
Or can you suggest another template which would be more suitable (multiple change requests since starting this project have resulted in butchering the template).

Sorry - the other thread was 18 pages long.. I missed the updated version of the mywidth file.
Have responded on the other thread, it's only partly solved, still not displaying properly on ipad. (but will mark this one as solved).
