Can't Update Extensions

I updated my site from Joomla 2.5 (latest) to Joomla 3.1.1 and it "crashed" since the extensions I use were not compatible. Once I disabled the offending modules, the site displayed fine (with "component" not found error messages on the corresponding menu items). However, I am now trying to install the upgrades for the extensions, but, no matter what I do, it won't work. Either the installer screen just loads and loads and does nothing or it gives me a "can't find xml set up file" error. The extensions are supposed to be compatible (one is rokgallery). No matter what I try to install, nothing works.
* I also used an ftp program to overwrite the joomla default files to make sure nothing was corrupt in the com_installer extension.
UPDATE: I don't think it's fixed (maybe it's not broken), but it worked. I let the installer load for 10 to 15 minutes and then I stopped the page and hit the upload and install button again. They loaded almost instantly. - When solved, please modify your original post and add (SOLVED) into the subject AND change your icon to the green check. This helps people know they can find a solution in your post if they have the same problem.

- You can always try to manually update extensions by uploading installation package without removing old version first
