I am very interested in buying this one. But I don't quite understand how the back end payment processing of the buyers credit card works. Is it tied into PayPal some how? Do I have top have a special merchant account set up directly with all of the major credit card companies?
Can someone with some experience with this please elaborate in good detail for me?

Paypal actually works as everything if you want it to. Paypal can be just Paypal, but it also operates as a payment processor just like any other payment gateway.
Paypal actually owns Magento now and they make sure that all options and features are loaded in there to work with your paypal account.
I will say that Magento is a big system and requires a good bit of configuration, so if you have not used it before, don't expect to just jump in and set up like a Joomla site. It takes good hosting and some time to set up. It is a great shopping cart system though and definitely worth it if you are wanting to set up a serious store.
