What is your opinion about Modal Popups

    • I have very mixed feelings but to me it is not the most ideal.

In regards to what you all think I would like to hear opinions about how you feel using them. For example for login are they good? it is becoming a world of tablets and smartphones and I just don't know how appropriate it is for these formats. It may be even more appropriate than what is already there or less. I don't know.

How about displaying videos and and pictures... Facebook seems to be using a mixture of the two with a dropdown for login and modal for video and pictures. perhaps this is a good place to be.

like to hear your opinions. Again, in the context of tablet pc and sp computing

    • Personally I avoid modal windows.
That concept had its time but in a mobile world it doesn't really work.

that's what I thought. but rokbox is based on a modal window. would you agree that a tweek to it would be a good idea. my thought about it that it would be great to define the location of where the information comes through.

      hmmmmm

    • I dont mean technical aspects.
RokBox works great on mobile device.
I'm looking at it from the UI/UX side of things.
I can't really see what it's good for (besides looking cool).

    • so you're saying the rokbox will work good on mobile? for me I find that when sites use modal the screen can never be found of where you want to find the item. perhaps rokbox is responsive in that way? I am glad to hear if it is.

Also, I think it is good for listing out information in a condensed formation so that you can put a bunch of video links and have the layout nice and neat. I think that is the best reason I can think of.

    • I agree with Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modal_window

      Use cases

Frequent uses of modal windows include:

Drawing attention to vital pieces of information. This use has been criticised as ineffective because users are bombarded with too many dialog boxes, and habituate to simply clicking "Close", "Cancel", or "OK" without reading or understanding the message.

Blocking the application flow until information required to continue is entered, as for example a password in a login process. Another example are file dialogs to open and save files in an application.

Collecting application configuration options in a centralized dialog. In such cases, typically the changes are applied upon closing the dialog, and access to the application is disabled while the edits are being made.

Warning that the effects of the current action are not reversible. This is a frequent interaction pattern for modal dialogs, but it is also criticised by usability experts as being ineffective for its intended use (protection against errors in destructive actions) due to habituation. Actually making the action reversible (providing an "undo" option) is recommended instead.

    • I can see its has some little usage in that area. But I just find ways to avoid that ...
      Same goes for dropdown-menus btw.

    • lol yes I agree with you as I have tried to avoid dropdown menus completely and actually have. However, with a login you have to do something of the two. a login module to me is not very sightly.

This is my observations so far. The dropdown menu is not really good for phones or tablets for media content.

however, I am at a snag. the log in I have decided to go with is both a modal pop up and a child drop down. I figure if someone decides to click or hover they will be covered. BUT, it doesn't work on my smartphone. the link just doesn't get clicked. hmmmmm

your thoughts and help has been appreciated on this. i will update if I find an even better solution.
