SOLVED Best Way to Update

    • Hello,

I'm looking to update my website to a new RT template. The current website has version 2.5 of Joomla and I am wondering whether or not I should just update the template and keep 2.5 or do a complete and fresh install of joomla 3.0

      Thanks!

    • if you want to keep your existing content (articles etc) just do this...

      1. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
      2. consider using a test site rather that then live site to do this first!
      3. make sure you install latest gantry first
      4. make sure Rt extensions are all up to date too.
      5. install the standalone version of your new chosen template in extension manager
      6. change the default template in template manager
      7. then have fun modifying all your content to fit with the new template.

      Regards, Mark.

    • MrT,

As much as I would love to keep the articles and such, I am more concerned with joomla and making sure that I have the right and best working version of it. If that means that I might have to rewrite my articles and such then that's fine. Also if more updates come out for joomla and they don't include 2.5, I would eventually have to update to 3.0 or 4.0 or whatever it ends up being. That's why I am asking whether I should stick with 2.5 or move to 3.0.

      Thanks

    • You can (and should) use 2.5 for now... you can upgrade it to J3.1 when you want too from inside admin backend (but don't for now as J3 is not yet recommended for production sites). If you started with a brand new rocketlaucher you would have the advantage of starting with all the demo data and just being able to edit to suit your own content (but obviously you won't have your own existing content in the database in a new rocketlauncher).

Many people are using J3 on productions sites - but there are still issues - the choice is yours really - personally all my client sites are on j2.5 and will remain there until LTS J3.5 is released.

    • Thanks MrT

I will stick with 2.5 then. If 2.5 is the better way to go then it makes it even better that I don't have to redo all my articles.

      Thanks
