I'm not going to name names, or point fingers, but there are a whole lot of RT'ers out there who are not abiding by the terms and conditions that they agreed to when they joined the club!
I am specifically referring to the concurrent template use portion of the terms. A quick traipse through the Member Sites board reveals many people who have easily exceeded these terms, or who are in the business of selling sites built on RT templates, but who are not professional members.
As a quick refresher: A three month membership means two concurrent templates. A year membership means three concurrent templates. Each year renewal gets a person two extra concurrent templates. A pro membership grants unlimited concurrent templates.
The one exception is for non-profit sites, which do not count towards a user's cap. This does not mean sites that were not charged for, however, it means sites that were done for a legally registered non-profit organization.
Why should we care?
First and foremost, stealing is wrong. Andy, and the rest of the crew here, have put in a tremendous amount of effort on each and every one of these templates, and they deserve our respect when it comes to abiding by the terms and conditions.
Secondly, it takes just a few minutes review of templates going back in time to realize that there is tremendous pressure to keep coming up with new and better templates. With 1.5 on the horizon, there will be some truly amazing things coming out, but the amount of effort, and therefore resources, required to provide these templates is always going up. By paying our dues, we ensure that the resources will be there to build ever greater templates.
Finally, it is good for you! I know that some out there will think this mere metaphysical namby-pamby on my part, but it is true, regardless. We tend to value the things that we pay for more than the things that we do not pay for, and if a person buys a three month membership, downloads all of the templates, and turns around and spits out dozens of sites, they are likely undercharging for them, and ripping themselves off as much, if not more, than they are ripping off the club.
Final thoughts:
I know this can be a rough business, and I know that many people don't have a lot of spare cash burning holes in their pockets. I also know that many people buy the intro membership because they really only want one template, and only after that do they go on to use more. If you are truly a starving Web designer, go ahead and bid that third project, but when you get paid, do the right thing and come back here and upgrade your membership.
Yes, and it's good that there's a Pro label by the username so it becomes obvious who is doing what.
If you look at the price of other clubs, you can see that Andy is very generous with his terms and talent. Some clubs are now charging near $500 for a pro membership, or give you only 1 site for a non-pro membership.
I was giving this some more thought -- you can't jump to conclusions. Maybe someone was a pro member but when it came time to renew they downgraded b/c they weren't using the new rockettheme templates. So the pro license still applies to what they got during their pro membership, correct?
