I am finding that if I want to have several templates available for my visitors to chose from and use several of the same module positions that are not always in the same position within each template,(boy that a long sentence) I have to rename a position. For example I would rename the user1 module position from user1 to demuser1 and then make a copy of a module that I wanted to use for that specific template and assign it to the renamed position name.
Now that I have you all confused, my thought is if that when new templates are made could the module position names by named template specific and then we would just add those names to the module positions list.

- A thoughtful suggestion but that would cause a lot of unnecessary issues for our members who are new to Joomla and are not fully aware of its abilities. You can easily do this yourself so I believe the benefits of using standard positions outweigh any custom ventures as you are describing.

This is something that I wanted to comment for too. I think some main modules like right/left/top etc... could be named as is so that the main layout is not changing completely. I find it difficult to follow each change on every release :-\
