SOLVED Rockettheme Authentication and Licensing, Ownership, etc.

Posted 11 years 2 months ago
    • I'm just seeing the new Rockettheme Authentication and not sure how it works. I've authenticated and it seems to have worked and I've not authenticated and it seems to have worked. Is there a post that explains it? I assume it's only for paid extensions? Not templates?

I'm curious as to what might happen with a client with whom I no longer have a relationship with? What happens if I have authenticated and then have nothing to do with the site again. Do they lose access to updating whatever extensions are in the site?

Please put a post in the REQUEST forum for template addition into RokUpDater!!!
I think the reasoning for not putting template's out for automatic updating, is that unlike extensions that are rarely modified by our members, templates might have a lot of CSS customization that would be lost if not saved prior to updating.

However with the advent of our LESS templates it has pleased me to no end that almost all our members are using custom CSS files and I think template updates in RokUpdater would be awesome. The only provisio I would have with selecting a template to update was a final warning screen about customized changes.

I really don't think that's an issue as our extensions are FREE now. So the site owner can update at will but when they haven't made a backup and installed an update that their server doesn't like - the site crashes - now you can sell them on your site maintenance package

    • I guess I wasn't aware that the authentication was for automatic updates of extensions. Also, since all extensions are now free I guess it doesn't matter what someone does with a site if they decide to take over responsibility for it.

I was thinking that it would be nice if someone did not have credentials to authenticate then they could not update Rockettheme products without paying for them. Since I pay for them it's a benefit of doing business with me.

    • I believe this is allong the same line of thinking. RT - I'm in the middle of migrating my clients to Joomla 3. And, while I noticed it a while back, after thought, I'm finding the Authentication requirement a problem for me. Not technically - ethically. When I give my clients their product, be that a brochure or a website, I give them every part of that product as I dont sign on to the practice of "if I hold back some files they will need me in the future". I think the idea of designer ownership of working files is shortsighted rubbish. So, assigning that belief to my websites, how am I supposed to give my clients complete access to their new product IF I enable auto update? Will I have to supply them with my RT credentials? Or is there a way we can add client IDs to our account with RT?

I can see the logic of posting here because of the Topic title. However...things have changed so Duane's issue is no longer relevant.
So in this span of time where we used to have paid for Membership extensions that needed a verfication system for updating, Andy has made ALL extensions free. So RokUpdater is no longer required.

    • Hi Dan, thank you. To be clear, can you confirm RokUpdater has nothing to do with templates and disabling the plugin does not remove anything useful?

Yes in fact all my clients sites and my local server test sites I've been uninstalling RokUpdater.
