    Joomla 1.0 or Joomla 1.5?

Posted 17 years 5 months ago
    • Hi

Just been checking out the Joomla web site, and see we are now a J1.5 RC 3 - with RC4 on its way, and it made me wonder how many people have upgraded yet, or are we all wating for the Final Candidate before risking our sanity? (Sort of like waiting for Vista SP1!!!)

Love to hear your comments too, on the good and bad points of J1.5.

      Thanks

      Dave

    • Joomla! 1.5 RC3 is great. The new J! core is far superior to the old one. The only bad thing that I can say about 1.5 is that there are far fewer components/templates for it, so, depending on what you are trying to accomplish, 1.0.13 might still be your best bet.

1.5 has superior performance to 1.0.13 - if you think your site is going to get a lot of traffic (especially concurrent visits), then make an effort to go with 1.5.

There are feature comparisons to be found, but, as with all Web design, it is far better to start with a list of functional requirements for your site, and pick a platform second. If several of your "must have" features are not (easily) possible in 1.5, but are in 1.0.13, then the choice is easy. If a lot of what you want to do is not possible under either platform, and will require custom development, however, then, at this point, go 1.5, so that the work will continue to be applicable into the future.

    • I will swith to 1.5 only when all components I use in my websites will be available for new platform; principaly SEF Advance! I did a lot of work to have some websites well ranked and I really don't want to change the url of my pages; I want them exactly the same.

    • Speaking of 1.5...I was setting up a duplicate of a 1.0.13 live site with 1.5 to see how it would work out...really needed JCAL 1.6 and so I paid the money to download it....I am ok with paying for extensions. but when I pay I actually expect to GET IT!!!

Keeps downloading a totally unrelated file

    • I am waiting for "stable"
I have put some personal projects on hold while I wait...
      Using 1x for current deployments

Have tried 1.5 on live server as well as dev.box just for giggles and shits and tried a few components etc. in legacy mode as well as some nightly builds of Virtuemart....

For now just patiently awaiting a stable 1.5....

    • Thanks for the comments.

I have tried 1.5 on my localhost but was saddened by the number of extensions available for it - the real problem was that a lot of extensions at the time (several months ago) touted themselves as 1.5 compatible but only worked if it was in legacy mode - which is not the same thing.

So - i wait also. I'm with Joe K as i don't mid paying for extensions that I think are usefull and work.

      Thanks again people.

    • I've used both extensively, and I can honestly say that the new Joomla core is a load of s**t. Absolutely dreadful piece of coding. looks like something that was knocked up on RentaCoder.

Stick with Joomla 1.0.13. Better still, get drupal (skins suck though).

    • Goodness me, so much bitterness in your very first post!! :o

This is the first negative review of J1.5 i've heard. Unfortunately, due to the tone in which it was written, I am forced to ignore it.

The license is still the only bummer about 1.5 in my book. Oh.. that and the fact that the core team left out the best features so they could sell them. Doing so is definitely within their right, and heck, I would most probably have done the same, but I still wish those features had been stuck into the core :(

I still use 1.0.13. Not comfortable using 1.5 yet.

    • I think everything about 1.5 is taking too long .... there are template companies releasing templates for RC1 while others are releasing for RC3 which just messes shyte up. People don't want to try and figure what extension or what template goes with what release........customer confusion is NEVER a good thing.

Imagine if Nintendo released a game console and told all the game makers they couldn't charge for games anymore; except for delivery of course. Also, imagine Nintendo releasing three versions of the same console and the maker of Madden2008 has to chose a version their game will work with.....on the box it says "Might work with new system"

    • Yeah darn annoying... esp. this RC business. They seem to be following phpBB's lead (phpBB3 is on RC7 now!!!).

When RC1 was released I was glad because I thought a stable was close. Unfortunately they've thrown the book out the window and since we don't know how many RC's there could be (5? 10?), the whole exercise is pointless. They might better have just kept calling it beta.

Same with the rocketerx extensions. Andy has always been meticulous with his templates... never releasing anything half-baked. It's what sets RT apart from all the other clubs. So I know it wouldn't have been his call to announce all the RW goodies long before anything stable is to be released.

I'm very excited about them RW goodies... so cruel to keep us waiting :) . Better to have not told us at all until they were closer to delivery.
