    Gantry 5

Posted 9 years 6 months ago
    • I didn't renew my membership recently after looking at Gantry 5 because it just felt like so much work when there was nothing really wrong with ganytry 4. For that matter there was nothing really wrong with Joomla and modules and templates.

However, this morning I got an email from someone wanting a content rich site and I thought of RT and was reminded about why I joined and stayed for nearly 10 years - the support. So I thought, f&%k it, I'll sign back up, I mean how difficult can it be and with the great support, it will be fine.

Now, I don't want a moderator to just come on here and point to another post. I've looked, this is why I'm posting.

But can someone summarise in a few lines how gantry 5 works and any tips or anything ..

What is a particle and an atom. Why do things appear to be on but then not show on the page. (I just rocketlaunched salient)

What I'm basically after is a dummies guide to what all this is and is there anythign I should be aware of .. or what was the penny dropping moment for you.

    • Well first of all thanks for renewing - we appreciate your business. :)

What you are asking is covered by the Gantry 5 documentation - but I presume you have read that hasn't helped you. http://docs.gantry.org/gantry5/particles/particles

Particles are chunks of functionality that enrich your site without you having to learn code (a bit like a third-party joomla module I suppose). The difference being that you can put particles directly onto your layouts if you wish without having to go into joomla module manager at all. You can also use a Gantry 5 particle module too (which is a sort of wrapper for a particle that enables you to publish particles to module positions just like you always have). Particles are visible on a page, atoms are the non-visible equivalent of a particle (i.e. they do something but nothing visble - for example "google analytics" atom). Also, you can write your own particles if you wish too because the languages used (TWIG and YAML) are very easy to understand and pick up (much easier than writing loads of php).

With Gantry 5 you are not constrained in terms of the number of module positions that you can have, you can call them what you like and put them where you like on your layout. "Module position" is just another sort of particle that you can put on your layouts, once you've put one on your layout and named it you can publish any joomla module to that position.

Gantry 5 has "outlines" - these consist of styles (colors etc), settings (default particle settings), layout (positioning of elements within your page), and Assignments (which menu items use the outline). So you need to be looking at the correct outline to determine what could be shown on the page (as always though just because a module position can be used it doesn't mean that it will be - you need to look at what modules are assigned to the module position too just like you did in Gantry 4).

I'm not sure what you mean by "Why do things appear to be on but then not show on the page. (I just rocketlaunched salient)" If you can give me more examples I can explain it to you. Also the documentation for the template shows where everything comes from on the home page http://www.rockettheme.com/docs/joomla/templates/salient/demo.md

      I hope that helps.

      Regards, Mark.

    • That helps a bit.

So are you saying that I don't need to use module manager - could I just use RokSprocket inside Gantry 5?

    • Regarding someting appearing to be on, but not showing .. I went into the home positions setting and then settings and I see these particles - i'm guessing that is what they are called and one of them is called Branding and it appears on .. but I can't see it on the homepage.

I also see others that appear on but they don't show on the homepage

    • Roksprocket is just a module like any other joomla module - so yes you can assign a roksprocket module to any position that exists on your layout. As roksprocket is a module you do need to use joomla module manager to change it's settings and assign it to a position (exactly the same way you always have in Gantry 4). Particles can be put directly onto a layout (and therefore you wouldn't need to use joomla module manager), but if you do that then you will likely end up with many outlines (which you should avoid), so it's better to keep you outline layouts to predominantly module position particles. In this way, you can share the same outline layout amongst many menu items. You only want to put particles directly on the layout if they are common across all pages (e.g. logo, menu, copyright etc).

No, you're misunderstanding here... The settings tab is the "default" particle settings that will be used should that type of particle be dragged onto your layout. If there isn't such a particle on the layout then the settings have no effect anywhere.
