WP: How to create child theme of Rocket theme

    • I need to make changed to the functions.php file in order to allow some file types for download. (Specifically epub and mobi for downloadable books.) If I modify the existing functions.php file it would get overwritten with an update. I tried creating a child theme the standard way, and it doesn't seem to be recognized. Can I get some instructions on how to create a child theme specifically for RocketTheme. Thanks!

    • Isn't this a question best answered by addressing the Global System Editor rather than a core file?

I would consider this to be a permission based issue regarding "allowed" file extension uploads. If so, JCE Content Editor allows control over unusual and/or not so customary file extensions through the Editor Profiles for every access level.

Maybe this one whizzed by my head, but I would really love an answer on this.

    • Excuse me, Damil. I wasn't clear.

I meant to refer him to the Admin Control Panel>Global Configuration>Default Editor to find out what editor he was using. I have found TinyMCE is somewhat limited.

JCE's content editor allows you to to use permission based access to file types not usually allowed by TinyMCE. The controls and allowed file types for both Admins and various levels of users are located in the Profiles Configuration settings for each access level.
While there are extensions out there, JCE's Media Manager works well for me. I would mention other powerful features, but I'll stay on topic here.

I was questioning whether it was necessary (or prudent) to go into the functions.php file.

I would suggest looking at the documentation on JCE here before changing a core file. I don't build without it any more. Just my 2 cents worth. Here's the link: www.joomlacontenteditor.net/support/documentation

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I took a couple days to recharge this week end.

      I hope this info helps.

    • Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to test it out...and when I informed the client I was working on trying to get this part completed...they decided to just not offer the mobi and epub formats of their book online. Thank you, I will probably go ahead and try to create the child theme anyway....when I have some time :)
