Nervous about Gantry 5

    • I consider myself a novice at Joomla, even though I've built a number of sites using RT templates, all Gantry 4 so far. The learning curve for Gantry 5 looks daunting. Can someone tell me what I'll be facing if/when I try to graduate to Gantry 5? How bad is the learning curve, and is it worth it?
      Thanks!
      Tom

    • Undoubtedly there is a learning curve to go through as with anything new, but we're here to help in the fourms if you get stuck. Somewhat ironically we also had to go through a biut of a learning curve ourselfves and for this reason I'd recommend that you start out with one of the more recent templates for Gantry 5. Some member have found that starting with our first Gantry 5 template is a little harder to understand (although they're perfectly fine one you understand the concepts).

Have a good read of all the Gantry 5 documentation on the Gantry site - there are videos and tutorials there too. Also, there's the actual template documentation that explains how everything on the home page is created. Finally I recommend that you install the rocketlauncher package for you chosen template as this will give you a working site that replicates everything in the demo.

Don't forget we're here to help, if you have a question please don't be afraid to ask in the forumm, there's no need to struggle in silence.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Dear Tom:

As daunting as Gantry 5 may seem to be, every member of Rocket Theme, including Mods, is on a steep learning curve due to the numerous changes in the Gantry framework. We are all in the same boat. Welcome aboard Sailor!

We all know resistance to change is built into our DNA so it's natural our brains are telling us, "Don't go there, you'll drown!"

Never fear! RT's Dream Team is here, and they maintain ample supplies of lifeboats, rings and lines to toss if you need them. Some will give a weary sailor a free drink if you ask nicely. In addition, there are plenty of seasoned members around to assist, encourage, and inspire you. We all share around here and your first mug of beer on me!

The only thing I would add is to practice, practice, practice OFFLINE to begin. You WILL make mistakes. Get Akeeba and put it on automatic backup. Make sure you back up your work prior to adding, deleting, changing particles or styling.

Think of Gantry 5 as a wonderful new discovery and another of life's many journeys on your way to enlightenment.

“The only thing we have to fear Is fear itself” - Franklin D. Roosevelt, circa 1932

      Happy sailing!

    • What kind of wine would you like with my whine? I can promise the entree won't be lamb.
