I am going to spend the most part of this weekend trying to learn how to us it. I have I have already logged in about six hours trying to get a webpage set up using rocket launcher with gantry five. I will hold my final judgment off until I finish this weekend's work. However, at this point I have to say that gantry five is the most user unfriendly bit of software I've ever encountered.
I've been a member of the rocket template gang for many years but you're about to lose me over this one.
It's different... several new core concepts and there's definitely a learning curve on it... getting Outline Inheritance live and working is a big deal.
.... but, even without Outline Inheritance... I'm building Joomla sites faster than ever in Gantry 5 largely because of the power, flexibility, and ease of Particles... I can mock up a new page very quickly and very visually. There's tons of improvement in the core features as well... page load times are much faster in G5, the overall menu system is vastly improved, it's MUCH easier to integrate custom CSS and JS... and back to Particles... if I need to modify an advanced particle/feature I don't need to know PHP! Which is good, cause I don't know PHP and googling PHP hacks/solutions/changes is never easy... TWIG and YAML, the 2 files that comprise the entire functionality of a Particle, are super easy to work with, modify, override, or write from scratch. Like a Particle in one template and want it in another template? You can port it easily
I also LOVE having the CMS Component output (Articles or other 3rd party Components) now packed into a Particle that I can put almost ANYWHERE. In Gantry 4 and most other templates Component Output only lives in one static place... in Gantry 5 you can drag and drop it wherever you want.
Hang in there... G5 has a LOT of features and at a surface level that makes it "feel" very complex... but once you're comfortable with the areas, sections, and features you use the most you can just take some extra assurance that when you do need something more custom, advanced, or complex for a client that there's a good chance it's already baked into Gantry 5 or can easily be added/integrated.

Well, maybe it's not as bad as I stated there is a lot to learn and at times there is not that much documation. I am really hung up on a couple of things that I can't figure out and I have spent hours trying to work it out. I am very busy and this is just slowing me down it is very frustrating. I have more work than I can handle now and I can't afford hours of reading and watching videos. Like I am trying to figure out how to edit gantry assigned modules that are locked.
The first 3 chapters are "must reads" in my opinion.

Thanks I have been reading them all day and watching videos. I think I have it under control now. I have just been away from Rocket Templates for a while and all of a sudden I have several web page jobs and so I came back. A couple of days ago I got me first look at Gantry 5 and freaked out. After making web pages for 20 years I didn't know where to start it was quite a shock and because of that I made it worse than it really is.
No worries at all... G5 is new for all of us and we're here to help with the transition. For the first time it's being hosted on GitHub which makes the development process much more community orientated as well so no doubt it will continue grow and morph and we welcome any and all input
