    • Rockettheme Templates - Template/Framework and SEO questions.

      A quick background:
I have some questions before I choose my first template/templates to extensively work with. I'm having a tough time figuring out which approach to use after trying several. I built my own sites for years with simple html markup/tables/etc. When I went with joomla 1.5 I learned to work it and experimented with free templates including afterburner and was very successful at getting what I wanted not only with the site appearance, but also rankings. I stuck with one CMS and learned it. With Joomla that was fairly easy, with frameworks (like Gantry) it's more to learn but doable. I'm now in the process of converting my sites to new technology.

      On to the main points:

As an example, I like the Focus and Irredescant main pages, but prefer the Photon and Galetae Portfolio pages. I want to be able to take the main theme page from Focus/Irredescant but have the portfolio from Photon/Galetian.

      1. Is this easy with Gantry 5?

      2. Is this something I can do without extensive knowledge of the framework technologies?

      3. Does an exclusive "gantry 5" template allow me more easier customisation than other older templates?

      4. With SEO:
a Is there any templates that are more seo-friendly or SEO focused?
      b. Are there certain templates I should avoid if SEO is top priority? I'm fairly solid with SEO in terms of how I personally affect building the sites, I'm talking purely backend structure standpoint especially with all these mobules, particles, slides, etc.

      5. Which templates were designed with Gantry 5 from the ground up?

      Any help/insight would be welcome.

    • Hi there,

OK - those are some tough questions but I will do my best to give you good answers.

      1. Define 'easy'! No, it is not easy, but it is a lot easier than many templates and frameworks.

      2. Yes, but you do need a good grasp of the basics behind the framework. For example, there is often more than one way to achieve a goal with Gantry 5.

      3. Yes, but a lot will depend on what you want to customise. Gantry 5 can give you much more flexibility compared to other templates.

4.a. All of our templates have been aimed at providing sound SEO principles. Gantry 5 templates when combined with a good server using php7.0 gives good page speed so provides a good help with SEO.

4.b. No, they are all very similar.

Please note - with the greatest of respect to SEO experts (of which there are many, and some are even qualified) the biggest influence is good content.

      5. Gantry 5 has developed over the past year or so and it is the later templates that make full use of its flexibility and functionality. Gantry 5 released its first template in 2015 and it is called Callisto.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Thanks for your help once again David. Easy for me would mean taking a night or two reading how to do similar things and experiment till I get close to what I want, which seems about right.

I hear ya about the SEO "experts". /wink. Just want to make sure there's no cutting edge Gantry 5 / HTML 5 equivelent of frames...

      Thanks again.

    • David's right about the ease of working in G5. Many folk had trouble transitioning from 4 to 5 because it is a different was of thinking, but it's really no harder. People with little coding skills are doing the things you're talking about, so jump in and try it. The mods here are the best in the business...responsive, thorough and willing to answer the same questions again and again (they have more patience than I do). Don't ever hesitate to ask them questions!

      Also, this thread:

is more than worth its weight in gold. You'll find walk-throughs for many modifications and cool tips as well.
      Good luck!

    • Thanks JM, I always appreciate a bit of encouragement, and that thread looks great!

Ya I've been watching the Rocket team grow for quite awhile now and felt they are very deserving of my time and money. I've never purchased any web-building apps as I was always able to build most stuff on my own with the occasional open source tools helping in areas as technology matured.

This time around, however, I'm going with the experts who have put far more passion into their work than I've seen in all the 20 years I've been working with HTML.

Besides... I'm too old to start from scratch anymore, a Joomla CMS and some customizable themes are my bag here on out!
