Need this kind of Gallery Functionality for several sites.

    • Before I went live with one site, I tried many different galleries and none of them are really what I was after. I ended up going with one that works after I made it work, but isn't ideal.

I'm here appealing to the crowd of Rocketthemers because I'd prefer to keep everthing in-house and avoid adding extensions or going elsewhere. However, the gallery is going to be my #1 in the next couple sites I make and I'd really appreciate any advice before I go the "install/uninstall" route, especially since many galleries and themes are pay-only.

I work with massive amounts of photos that rotate often. What's needed is something that can be setup quickly, looks good, and doesn't need much in the way of flashiness. Most galleries way over-do it (and require too many backend resources) by focusing on making photos load "pretty" or have flashy light boxes.

Here's what I ideally need, they all are must-have's:

      1. Must be responsive with the ability to set 'columns' based on screen size.
      2. Must be folder based. Drop photos in a folder, gallery automatically does it's thing.
      3. Must be easy to work with alt tags (mass alt-taggable within the individual gallery).
      4. Must not be bloated.

      Any advice?

    • #2 is going to be your main issue... I'm unaware of any Galleries that do that
    • SEARCH the forum first! These boards are rich in knowledge and vast in topics. This includes searching just the 'Solved' forums, using Google, and using ChatGPT :woohoo:

    • Thanks mate, I'm not having much of an issue with finding folder-based. Folder functionality or something similar (ease of use) is fairly common if I go extensions outside of the rocketthemes.

Rocketthemes and gantry is fun to work with, I really like the results. However good gallery based particles are lacking. I found using the rokgallery to be cumbersome with most functionality of editing not useful for me -- might be fine for smaller static galleries.

With mosiac/imagegrid stuff, they take quite a lot of effort to make album covers for galleries, think I need to avoid them in the future in lieu of an extension unfortunately.

I'm finding alt-tagging to be spotty to find, which is really weird considering we're talking about images. Most have descriptions, titles, flavor text etc but a crap-shoot for alt-tagging functionality.

Anyway I think I'm just going to have to install/uninstall stuff again. Since refreshing and relearning site-building, I went through almost the entire gallery extensions and only found a few that might work better than I currently 'frakensteined'.

    • I'm trying rokgallery again, fresh joomla install, fresh galatea + gantry 5 install, fresh rokgallery install, nothing else. When I go to upload images within the component, it get about 30 out of 50 images checked off by the job then hangs on "...waiting for the job to be ready." Actually it looks like it's getting to 100%, but the icons aren't checkmarked, and it still sits on the job waiting - been about 15 minutes. Apparently there's also no way to "exit" or cancel short of just closing out the tab as well.

Stuff like that turns me off from using many of these types of galleries, we work with thousands of photos. Which is why folder-based, while typically not having a tons of bells and whistles, is always preferable for my kind of work.

    • Have you tried:
      Event Gallery

We used that on a site some time ago that I no longer maintain, but as I recall, it had a slew of options including flickr and picasa support and generated thumbs and large images from a directory if memory serves me correctly. The current version is several generations newer than what I used, so can't comment on it's functionality now, but it was easy to set up and deploy back then.
      Good luck!

    • Thanks JM, ya I loaded that up today along with about a dozen others. Gotta admit for something that seems so simple and critical with a large amount of web design (and galleries have been around for many years), Im shocked at how few good options exist. Most try to do too much and end up doing much of it poorly, or specialize yet miss the mark on what they are focused on.

The one I've modified to work on my first site is Galleryaholic, which is fine but has no alt-tagging, modules need refreshed if you add photos, and sizing can be an issue when setting breakpoints.

The one I may end up using is RC justified Gallery, but again no alt tagging, and no module support (I asked about putting it in the particle module, but so far Ive not been able to figure it out).

The ones I'm also interested in are Droppics, and RSmediagallery. However Droppics "demo" is not a demo, and there's no admin testing, so I can't tell what it's really like. Rsmediagallery is similar to RokGallery and also isn't folder based. Since they are paid only and I can't get the answers I need, I'll be passing.

    • Found my gallery -- I've happily settled on RC Justified Gallery .

The dev is great. As I mentioned it didn't have a few features I needed and not only did Rich reply to my questions, he updated the extension to add the alt tag functionality plus a few other things. Not too many devs like that out there, major kudos.

And now that I know how to make a module for shortcode, this gallery does everything I need and does it far better than the many dozens I've gone through over the last month including paid ones.

Hope this helps anyone else who have similar needs as I do.
