The the new Grav club launching I was thinking that it would be fun to explore the new platform but I don't think I'm willing to double my membership expenses just to use that and maintain my Joomla club membership.
I was thinking of a proposal of a new kind of membership: one geared towards the 'less professional' who does not make a ton of money doing development work to pay for the club memberships. I am a 'hobbiest' supporting a few nonprofit sites in my community... I don't get paid to do the work but it's how I like to contribute. I like to try out a couple of Joomla templates for a site and then, after playing with them, select one that I will go with and then develop the site. Picking and purchasing an individual template is not something that I think would work for me because sometimes I change my mind. I also want to try out Grav and WordPress and have options to use different platforms.
Proposal: A 'RocketTheme' club membership that provides access to all templates for the three platforms (Joomla, WordPress and Grav) geared towards the hobbiest or person who deploys very few web sites but likes the flexibility to use different platforms and experiment with different templates. This membership type would come with only 1 site license and you would play for additional licenses as needed... or use the ones you accummulate over the years.
I have 33 site licenses that I will never need... I only support 4 sites right now. I'd rather have the flexibility to choose the platform and the templates and forego the cost of site licenses that I don't need. I'd pay $50 per license if needed if I get more sites in the future.
Any thoughts to expanding your customer base in such a way? You can keep the other membership types as well for people who find the value in the additional site licenses and staying with a specific platform.
Right now the 'value proposition' for me has faded being limited to one membership with additional costs to get a second membership when I am a low-volume user of the templates... I'm considering moving on.
First of all, thank you for your suggestion. We do appreciate member feedback as it does help us grow and move towards bigger and better things.
While we appreciate that not everybody is a full-time web developer and as such may not be recouping their costs on the same scale, it is those hobbyist people who often require the most support. As with any business, we too have to generate a revenue to pay our staff and ensure we have enough resource to support our members as well as research and develop our products.
If we created a membership along the lines of your suggestion we would see our developer membership migrate to the new membership as a way for them to save money and increase profits.
Some of the background circumstances you provided was highlighted a few years back when we surveyed members about the types of options they wanted. This led to our lifetime template option where people pay for a template and still get support and updates. For many end user this was a great move forward as the developers could simply suggest that the client buys the template so as to have the update and support access. The cost is minimal to most businesses or charities.
We will always look for new and innovative ways to grow the business and provide value for money to our members. But when we do have new ideas we need to ensure they make commercial sense and are sustainable as well.
Many thanks for your idea though.
