Do older templates get updated to use the newer gantry?

I am talking about PRAXIS specifically which loads slow due to lots of requests for js and css (maybe not all the templates fault).
I do read that the more recent gantry is designed with speed in mind. Using tools like the pingdom speed checker you get these issues showing up.
So a couple of points I would like to know about here, thanks.
EDIT- ok I just saw this www.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates-compatibility-matrix so PRAXIS is G4 so are there any really good speed benefits between g4 and g5?

G4 templates cannot be used with g5 - Gantry 5 uses it's own templates and it not backwards compatible with Gantry 4.
Is Gantry 5 faster that Gantry 4 - well obviously it depends what you are doing on your website, but in general, yes.
