Video Particle Overlay

Hi ,
I'm working with the video particle in the Citadel on the front page. I'd like to do a black overlay with an opacity of about 0.5
I've tried doing this is the _video.scss file but it doesn't seem to do anything. Am I on the right track or should I be doing something else?

you shouldn't edit our scss files directly...
There are several ways you can add custom CSS into Gantry 5:
On the Base Outline or Per Outline Level:
Page Settings > Assets
Page Settings > Atoms

or at a global custom file level
[template-name]/custom/scss/custom.scss
