Best way to convert site to new template ?

  • Best way to convert site to new template ?

    • I have just upgraded my site from Mambo to Joomla, and I now want to convert the SolarFlareII theme to VersatilityII.

After installing the template I switched over, it looked pronmising but there's clearly some work to be done. I need to move around some menus items and modules. Some articles need to be reformatted and generally the whole site needs a good tidy up.

      What's the best approach ?
I don't want to do it on the live site as it will take 4 or 5 days and will look a mess until finished.
I don't have the luxury of a development system.

Should I create a second Joomla installation ?
If I do that then there are problems because my web host will only let me have 1 database. So I would have to create/populate all the mos_xxxxx tables with a mos2_xxxxxx prefix. Is there a utility to do that ?

Am I missing something obvious ?
Maybe a totally independant development system is the only way to do a seamless conversion ?

      Cheers,
      Steve

      Hello, Steve

Having the freedom to create mulitple databases is something I could not live without because I work on many Joomla sites. I also experiment with new contributions and components on a sub-domain using an identical database from my main site.

I would say an independant development system is the only way for you to go, if you do not want your visitors to see a mess while you are remodeling.

What hosting company are you using? I am allowed unlimited databases, along with unlimited hosted domains, for 7.95 per month with DreamHost.com

As a friendly offer from a fellow Jooma User, I would be more than happy to create an extra database and subdomain on my system for a month or two. I have had my plan since 2000 and I have plenty of room to help you out. I could even give you a hand exporting the data and importing it into the new site..

A simple SQL dump from PHPmyAdmin would give you everything needed to import into the development site. Then you can arrange everything out of view from visitors.

      Many thanks for the offer.

My web host has granted a second db, seems to be the best route.

      Cheers,
      Steve
