    Accessibility / WCAG 2.1 AA / Section 508 / Fair Housing / ADA

Posted 3 years 8 months ago
    • Hi All!

I am noticing an uptick in lawsuit demand letters for US-based small businesses not being ADA accessible. To date, I haven't had any lawsuits levied against sites I've created, but I've noticed that there is a huge push for accessibility.

On the one hand there is "plugins" that really don't improve things, and on the other hand there is trying to properly structure content to attempt to comply with standards such as WCAG 2.1 AA. I know that the US regulatory aparatus is unclear in which standards they want people to follow, and it will probably be some time or never before a consitent standard is nailed down.

It is definitely clear that Rockettheme trying to guarantee its templates are fully compliant is commercially unreasonable, not to mention the liability exposure in trying to do something (even with all the disclaimers we agree to). However, are there plans to possibly release a template where there is a focus on meeting accessibility standards out of the box?

My knowledge is not absolute on the topic, I've been able to use automated tools like the Wave tool by Webaim to resolve immediate structure concerns across all my Gantry 5 sites, and I notice rockettheme makes use of ARIA landmarks too on grantry 5 sites. That tool has helped me to work on better color schemes and resolve major concerns. It's definitely not a substitute for formal review by a specialist, though my clients typically don't want to pay for that kind of service.

The only reputable template I've found so far in this space is here: templates.joomla-monster.com/joomla30/jm...une-offices-wcag/en/

I'd much rather keep my template acquisition/funds with RocketTheme as a loyal customer, so I'm hoping some more consideration will be made towards trying to improve accessibility with current standards. Additionally, I know there is a github issue talking about this, but I was kind of unsure how that applies to the monthly template releases.

Finally, if I'm misunderstanding what has been done or my assumptions are incorrect, please let me know.

Please let me know your thoughts.

      Thanks.

    • Sorry, no. There are no plans to release such a template. We also do not release templates every month any longer - it much less frequently now as we have announced previously.

      Regards, Mark.
