    Mods

    • Yes, I have read the tutorials, posted to the forums, and read the replies.

*I am not complaning!* Just offering some food for thought.

What I really want to do is simple and could probably do what I want in HTML in a day or two.

I have no regrets renewing my membership, and the support here bar none is the best.

And up until now, being a casual user I haven't run into many roadblocks.

Now, it's time to get serious and I wonder who Joomla is for, or who these themes are made for...

Maybe for and experienced user, 'RokZoom Enabled' means 'Great, this'll take me five minutes!'

But for me, it means 'Forget it'.

The same goes for making a video page, the possibility of using RokMediaScroller and linking to site content instead of feeds, or having the video appear in 'media box' style window.

My wish: Mods? Components? that can be worked with from the Control Panel level.

Yes, I know I'm a beginner. Yes, I know that I need to 'study more'.

However, during 10 hours of tinkering and searching for something that can do what I want without being a rocket scientist...

      www.joomlaworks.gr/

Frontpage Sllideshow, Simple Image Gallery - Both controlled from a back end component!

No turning off WYSIWYG editors, no pasting code; a clean interface, upload, type, save, finish.

      slideshowpro.net/examples/

      This one handles video!

Not really fair because it's a plugin for Flash or LightRoom... just a reference for the 'wishlist'

But in any case, that's the functionality that makes life easy.

      *I am not complaning!* x10 :o

I'd just like to see mods (components?) that are a little more 'stupid user' friendly.

    • I know where you are coming but your examples are from JoomlaWorks, JoomlaWorks is a dedicated extensions provider, whereas we provide templates as our main priority. The extensions themselves are subsidiary and I wouldn't anticipate that they could match their counterparts who have been developed to a much greater degree.

You don't have to use our extensions or even JoomlaWorks, there are so many available which will suit your needs better :)

    • I came back this morning to delete this post.... ;)

      Anyway,

I guess that's where the problem lies... :'(

Currently there are 2817 extensions, it's mind boggling!

For example, I want rotating banners but Joomla doesn't have a native mod that rotates, at least not that I can figure.

There are 97! Which one? I don't know, so just to do that takes a few hours.

I also need a simple way to implement a gallery and streaming media for my own site, not a feed....

132 galleries, 97 streaming media extensions...

A whole day visiting different sites, still haven't got it sorted.

Most of the stuff is not 1.5 compatible yet, when I find something that is, I look at the demos and support forums, ease of use, compatibility, etc.

It takes a huge amount of time.

I know your main priority is templates; they're fantastic and that's why we're all here.

But looking at Joomla, and template clubs in general makes building a web site look deceivingly simple.

It's like watching somebody climb Mt. Everest on the Discovery Channel. ::)

Sitting there on the couch with a bag of chips, you say 'How had could that be?' 'I could do that.'

      It's funny!

Look at the Joomla forum; how many people can't figure out how to get rid of the 'Welcome to the Frontpage' off the Frontpage.

      Oh well, back to work...

    • To paraphrase Nietzsche, 'One must crawl before they can walk before they can run before they can fly; one can't fly into flying." :)

I've only been playing with Joomla for 3 months now, having migrated over from another CMS based on asp.net...everything is totally new to me. I have yet to finish a site, as I am really trying to learn all there is to learn and playing with all the extensions and the templates and the CSS and the page suffixes and Fireworks and bridges and SEO stuff and core files and mootool libraries and and and and and... :)

I think you get out of it what you put into it.
